You can feel the heat starting to take over the Sunshine State, and the fishing is heating up right along with it. Conditions across Tampa Bay have been very productive, with strong bait presence and active fish throughout the system.

The tarpon migration is officially underway, with fish staged up around the bridges and pushing along the beaches in larger schools. Anglers targeting the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and nearby passes are seeing consistent action, especially during early morning and late evening tide swings. Live threadfins and crabs are producing, and timing the tide has been key to getting bites from these migratory fish.

Inshore, the redfish bite has been solid. I have been finding better quality fish by soaking cut threadfin around mangroves, creek mouths, and cuts during higher tides. These fish are pushing shallow with the water and feeding aggressively when the conditions line up.

The speckled trout bite has been one of the best I have seen in years. There have been numerous trout over 23 inches showing up, which is a great sign for the health of the fishery. Trout are responding best to small pilchards and shrimp imitations like the DOA shrimp. Fishing these baits slowly with long pauses has been the most effective approach, especially over grass flats with good moving water.

Flounder numbers have also been impressive. Target sandy areas near structures such as docks, rock piles, and channel edges. Dragging baits along the bottom has been the most productive technique, as these fish are holding tight and waiting to ambush prey.

Overall, Tampa Bay is fishing exceptionally well right now. With warming water temperatures, strong bait schools, and active predators, this is a prime time to get on the water and take advantage of the action.

Cobia have been showing up around random markers, towers, and channel structures, so it is essential to always stay prepared. Keep a pitch bait on standby because these fish are naturally curious and often appear when you least expect them. I like to have a freelined rod ready or a larger spinning setup rigged with a live eel or pinfish. When one shows up, a quick and accurate presentation makes all the difference.

Do not be surprised if multiple fish appear at once, as cobia are known to travel in small groups or packs this time of year. Stay alert while running between spots, as free-swimming cobia can also be spotted cruising the surface. If you are ready to book a Tampa Bay fishing charter, now is the time. Do not wait, this spring bite has been nothing short of phenomenal.
