Tampa Bay Goliath Grouper Fishing Charter: Jonathan, Colin, and Nick’s Incredible Day on the Water

A Tampa Bay Fishing Charter Filled with Goliath Grouper, Snook, and Unforgettable Memories

When most anglers think about booking a Tampa Bay goliath grouper fishing charter, they picture catching a few fish, enjoying time on the water, and hopefully landing something memorable. For Jonathan, his son Colin, and their friend Nick, a recent trip with Salty Scales Fishing Charters turned into something much bigger. What started as a challenging morning battling wind and searching for bait quickly evolved into one of the most exciting Tampa Bay Goliath Grouper fishing adventures I’ve experienced in recent years.

As a Tampa Bay fishing guide for more than a decade and a local angler for over thirty years, I’ve learned that the best fishing stories rarely happen exactly as planned. Sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate. Sometimes bait is difficult to find. And sometimes, those challenges lead to unforgettable memories.

A Windy Start to Our Tampa Bay Goliath Grouper Fishing Charter

The day began at 6 a.m. with Jonathan, Colin, and Nick meeting me at the dock, ready for an adventure. The forecast called for sustained winds of 16 to 18 miles per hour, creating rough conditions throughout Middle Tampa Bay. While windy weather can make fishing more challenging, it certainly doesn’t mean the fish won’t bite.

Our first objective was gathering live bait. Anyone who regularly fishes Tampa Bay knows that quality bait can make all the difference between an average day and an exceptional one. We spent nearly an hour and a half searching the flats, chumming, and throwing the cast net in hopes of filling the livewell.

Unfortunately, bait was scarce.

Despite seeing some activity, we only managed to secure a few dozen pilchards. While it wasn’t ideal, we had enough to get started. More importantly, I had already prepared for our primary target species by securing large jack crevalles several days earlier.

The reason?

Jonathan and his crew wanted to catch Goliath Grouper.

Targeting Goliath Grouper in Tampa Bay

Few fish create more excitement than a Goliath Grouper. These giant predators are among the most powerful fish found in Tampa Bay and are famous for their ability to test both tackle and anglers.

After making our run through the rough water, we arrived at one of my favorite Goliath Grouper spots. We rigged up an Okuma Makaira on heavy tackle and prepared one of the large jack crevalles for deployment.

I explained to the guys that when a Goliath eats, things happen fast.

They were about to find out just how true that statement was.

Jonathan Lands the First Goliath Grouper

“Reel down.”

The fish initially dropped the bait, but we sent it right back down.

Moments later, the rod doubled over.

Jonathan connected with the fish and immediately went to work. Based on the way the fish was fighting, I anticipated something much larger. However, after a short battle, a healthy Goliath Grouper of approximately 20 pounds came to the surface.

While it wasn’t the giant we expected, Jonathan was thrilled.

Catching a Goliath Grouper is a bucket list accomplishment for many anglers, and Jonathan had just checked it off his list. After a few quick photos, we released the fish healthy and strong.

Little did we know, the biggest fish of the day were still waiting.

Nick Battles the Biggest Fish of His Life

We rigged another large jack crevalle and dropped it down to the structure. Within minutes, the clicker screamed.

I handed Nick the rod.

The moment he reeled down, chaos erupted.

The fish dug hard toward the structure, using every ounce of power to gain an advantage. Unlike many species that make long runs, Goliath Grouper rely on brute force. They pull straight down, using their immense weight to challenge anglers.

Nick fought hard and stayed focused throughout the battle.

Eventually, a massive fish surfaced beside the boat.

We estimated the Goliath Grouper weighed between 80 and 100 pounds.

For Nick, it was the largest fish he had ever caught.

The excitement on the boat was contagious. High fives were exchanged, photos were taken, and smiles stretched from ear to ear.

But we weren’t finished yet.

Colin Hooks, a Giant Tampa Bay Goliath Grouper

200lb goliath grouperWith one large bait remaining, we prepared for one final drop.

The bait reached the bottom.

A few moments later, the rod loaded up again.

Colin grabbed the rod and reeled down.

Immediately, it was obvious this fish was different.

The grouper was larger, stronger, and determined to reach the structure. Colin fought hard, but eventually the fish managed to get wrapped up deep below the boat.

At this point, many anglers lose the battle.

Fortunately, we weren’t ready to quit.

Jonathan stepped in to help while I coached from the sidelines. Together, they slowly began gaining line. Inch by inch, they pulled the fish away from the structure.

Finally, the fish broke free.

A giant Goliath Grouper surfaced beside the boat.

We estimated the fish weighed between 150 and 200 pounds.

It was an incredible catch and undoubtedly one of the most memorable moments of the trip. While Colin needed some assistance to complete the battle, he was part of an experience very few anglers ever get to enjoy.

Switching Gears for Tampa Bay Snook Fishing

By this point, the rough conditions were beginning to take their toll. Colin was feeling a bit seasick, so we decided to head to calmer waters.

Unfortunately, bait remained difficult to find.

I gave the group two options.

We could fish with what little bait we had left or make a run to the Skyway Bridge and attempt to fill the livewell.

Without hesitation, they chose the second option.

After a quick run and about thirty minutes of chumming, two casts of the net completely changed our day.

The livewell was loaded.

Now it was time for snook.

An Incredible Tampa Bay Snook Bite

With plenty of fresh bait onboard, we moved into some productive inshore areas known for holding snook.

The action was immediate.

Fish after fish came over the rail.

At times, multiple anglers were hooked up simultaneously. The group experienced the kind of nonstop action every Tampa Bay fishing charter customer dreams about.

By the end of the bite, we had caught an estimated 20 to 30 snook.

The laughter, excitement, and friendly competition made for an unforgettable afternoon.
