Tampa Bay Fishing Report April 2026

Tampa Bay is absolutely teeming with life right now, and it is showing on every trip. Pilchards and threadfins have pushed in thick across the flats, along the beaches, and around the markers, and with that bait has come an aggressive wave of toothy pelagics, especially Spanish mackerel. When that bait shows up like this, everything starts to feed, and right now the bay feels alive from top to bottom. We have been dialing it in with light spinning setups like the Okuma Taveres combo, and it has been nonstop action. These fish are loading the Yeti quickly, and clients are loving every second of it. Spanish mackerel are not only great table fare, nutrient dense and delicious, but they hit fast, run hard, and put on a show. They are one of those species that keep rods bent and smiles wide, and right now they are as consistent as it gets.

Best Time to Fish in Tampa Bay

The most consistent bite has been about thirty minutes after a tide change, especially when the water really starts moving. That clean push of water seems to fire everything up, and if you can time your trip around those transitions, your chances of success go way up. Paying close attention to current flow and positioning has been a major key to staying on fish.

Tampa Bay Fishing Report April: Redfish and Snook Action

Redfish have been very active, with plenty of what I call puppy redfish in the mix, fish in that 18 to 22 inch range cruising the flats and working mangrove shorelines. These fish have been feeding well and are providing consistent action. Live bait has been producing best, with pilchards, pinfish, and shrimp all getting it done. As the sun gets higher, do not stay out in the open. Slide tight to the mangroves, oyster edges, and shaded structure where these fish continue to feed.

Snook are holding in those same areas and are feeding aggressively. They are more than willing to chase a well presented bait right now, especially around moving water and structure. Do not go too light on your leader. These fish are notorious for rubbing you off on mangroves and structure. I recommend sticking with 30 to 40 pound leader to give yourself a solid chance at landing a quality fish.

Speckled Trout Bite

Speckled trout have been steady, especially over grass flats with nearby sand holes. The DOA shrimp continues to be a go to bait and has been producing consistently. Work it slow, keep it natural, and focus on transitions between grass and sand. Trout have been staging in these areas and will ambush baits as they move through. Wait for the current to start moving for optimal success.
